Growing galangal (blue ginger) from rhizomes

>> Monday, April 30, 2007

I cut off this piece of galangal from my plant this morning to cook beef rendang.

The two little galangal rhizomes at the top can be snapped off for planting. Grow them in well drained soil. They are quite easy to grow. I grow them outside and they have managed to survive our winters.

Hi Russ,

Which part of NZ are you at?

Wow, fresh galangal! I'm so fed up with the tasteless frozen ones. Do you sell the plant? I live in East Auckland and my email is vlimyy@yahoo.com.

Thanks

Hi, I found your blog by googling. My family and I planning to move to auckland next year. It's nice to know that you can plant ginger there. Could you teach me how to grow them?
Is it also possible to grow other kind of rhizoma spices, like turmeric/curcumin etc?
thanks a lot! :)
