My Troubled Nectarine Tree

>> Wednesday, December 03, 2008

I have resigned myself to the fact that I am not going to enjoy any fruits from my nectarine tree. Year after year the lone tree I have suffer from leaf curl, blight, brown rot and who knows what else ! At the first sign of trouble, out come my copper spray but it does not appear to solve any of the problems.

It seems Auckland's climate with its high humidity is not very suitable for nectarine growing. For goodness sake...if that was the case, why sell nectarine trees in the plant centre here ! If I had known, I would have bought some other fruit trees in its place.

Very distorted curly blistered-like leaves

Leaf curl turning the leaves black

Damaged fruits

Hi Sinner,

I live in California, US and my nectarine and peach trees have the same problem too just like your pictures shown. My husband searched the internet and he found out that windy location (our house is at windy spot)will do that. I also talked to nursery people and they said remove the infected leave/fruit at first sight (the ones fallen on the the ground should be removed too). We tried removing diseased leaves/fruits this past spring (up to a point when the tree almost bald!)-- and it works! The leaves grow back and healthier and fruits not affected. Hope this help. BTW, I checked out your recipe blog and already bookmarked some recipes, will try them out sometime.
Regards,
Regina

Hi Regina,
Thanks for the tip. Didn't realise a windy location will do that. It is indeed very windy here. For us here, the high humidity also doesn't help.

After spraying it a few times with copper, I left it alone and by some miracle the leaves and fruits recovered. In fact I got a bucket load of fruits from it just last week. And they were hugh too.

Thanks for checking out my recipe blog. Would love to hear how you go with the recipes.
