Pepino

>> Monday, February 09, 2009

The fruit of the pepino is very sweet and juicy especially if picked vine ripen. However, most times I have to pick it before it turns yellow as I have to beat the possum (or could be a rat) to it. Quite refreshing - the fruit not the rat !

A plant that seems to thrive on neglect. Easy to grow and does not require much care.

A basket full. Various sizes and varying degrees of ripeness

Some of them can grow to a good size

Unripe Pepino on the vine

Pest eaten even though it is still green. If the fruit has turned slightly yellow, the whole fruit would be eaten and only the outer skin would be left hanging

Footnote on the weather today. The temperature was not as high but humidity was very high. With no breeze it was really muggy. Everything felt damp and moist. Slight drizzle towards the evening. Hopefully we get some 'real' rain.

Pepino looks interesting... I'm assuming it's a type of melon? I've never had one but now I'm gong to have to track it down to give it a try.

I hope it eventually cools down for you. Seeing how hot your summer has been, doesn't make me look forward to my summer!

Frances,
The pepino taste like a rock melon. The good thing about this vine is that it doesn't need to be replanted annually unlike the other melons.

It was a bit cooler the last couple of days which was a bit of a relieve.
